Description
The 2026 Daiwa BG SW takes one of saltwater fishing’s best-known workhorse reels and gives it a substantial big-game redesign rather than a simple cosmetic update. A new gasket-sealed waterproof aluminum frame and body cover provide the rigid foundation needed to keep the drivetrain aligned when the reel is heavily loaded, while Daiwa’s POWERDRIVE DESIGN brings an oversized POWER DIGIGEAR and reinforced POWERDRIVE ROTOR into the BG platform. The practical payoff is exactly what heavy saltwater anglers want: more usable cranking authority, less flex at the rotor and line roller, and a reel that continues to feel solid when a large striped bass digs into current, a tuna settles beneath the boat or a shark turns a long fight into a test of tackle.
Daiwa also upgrades the fighting and handling systems around that drivetrain. The ATD TOUGH carbon drag is engineered to maintain smooth, sustained pressure through long runs, while the gasket-lined J-Braid-ready spool allows braid to lock directly to the spool without a full monofilament backing layer. A machined aluminum screw-in handle and new soft-touch egg-shaped power knob give the angler a secure grip and useful leverage when the reel is working hard. With seven sizes from 5000-H through 20000, the BG SW covers a wide Northeast range: the 5000 and 6000 are excellent heavy-inshore and nearshore tools for striped bass, tog, mahi and lighter tuna work; the 8000 through 14000 sizes step squarely into jigging, popping and live-bait tuna applications; and the 18000 and 20000 provide the drag and line reserve needed for large bluefin, yellowfin, bigeye and sharks. For anglers who want a genuinely powerful, sealed aluminum-bodied reel with modern Daiwa big-game technology but do not need to pay Saltiga-level money, the new BG SW is an exceptionally strong value proposition.
