Description

The 2025 Daiwa Saltist Star Drag is a fast, rigid aluminum conventional reel built for anglers who want strong saltwater performance without moving into Saltiga-level pricing. Daiwa uses a one-piece aluminum frame and sideplate to keep the drivetrain supported under load, while its ATD carbon-fiber drag system is designed to start smoothly and maintain consistent pressure as a fish runs. Four corrosion-resistant ball bearings plus a roller bearing help protect long-term smoothness in saltwater, and the centrifugal brake system applies more braking force as spool speed rises, giving anglers useful control when casting live bait, jigs or sinker-and-bait rigs.

The lineup is divided naturally into two performance groups. The SLTSD15, 20 and 30 all use 6.4:1 gearing, recover 39.5 inches per crank and produce 17.6 pounds of max drag, with each step adding line capacity and only a modest amount of weight. The 15 is the compact inshore model for fluke, sea bass, striped bass and lighter blackfish work; the 20 is a stronger all-around choice for deeper bottom fishing and heavier line; and the 30 adds enough reserve for deep structure, large striped bass and light-offshore use while still weighing under 17 ounces.

The SLTSD35, 40 and 50 keep the same 6.4:1 ratio but use a larger spool geometry that increases retrieve to 47.4 inches per crank and raises max drag to 22 pounds. That extra pickup is valuable for fast vertical jigging, clearing slack in deep water and working pelagic jigs, while capacity progresses from 390 yards of 50-pound braid in the 35 to 360 yards of 100-pound braid in the 50. All six models use a soft-touch T-shaped power handle for leverage. For Port Tackle customers, the 35 is the best transition into offshore jigging, the 40 adds meaningful tuna and deep-water reserve, and the 50 is the maximum-capacity Saltist for anglers who want a high-speed star drag—but for sustained giant-tuna pressure or true heavy big-game work, a two-speed lever drag remains the more appropriate tool.
