Description
The Shimano Talica A is Shimano’s flagship two-speed lever-drag conventional reel, built for anglers who want maximum cranking efficiency and drag performance in a compact, highly refined offshore platform. Infinity Drive is the centerpiece of the redesign: Shimano reworked the drag architecture to reduce side-load pressure through the drivetrain, allowing the reel to turn noticeably easier when substantial drag is already applied. That matters most late in a tuna fight, when the fish is straight below the boat and every handle turn is being made against both drag pressure and the fish’s weight. A rigid aluminum HAGANE Body keeps the drivetrain aligned under load, while X-Protect adds water resistance around critical internal areas without making the reel feel heavy or sluggish.
Every Talica A in this family is a true two-speed reel, but Shimano gives each chassis a deliberately different balance of speed, torque, drag and line capacity. The 12IIA and 16IIA use 5.7:1 high / 3.1:1 low gearing with 44 pounds of max drag, making them exceptional compact tuna reels for jigging, live bait, chunking and sinker-rig work. The 20IIA and 25IIA step up to 50 pounds of drag and an exceptionally deep 1.9:1 low gear, giving the angler real mechanical advantage when larger tuna settle underneath the boat. The 40IIA and 50IIA move into full big-game territory with 66 pounds of max drag, 1.7:1 low gearing and enormous braid capacity for large bluefin, bigeye, heavy trolling and canyon applications.
Shimano’s Cross Carbon Drag provides the smooth, durable pressure expected from a premium lever-drag reel, while the included Light-Line Drag Cam gives anglers a more gradual drag curve when fishing lighter monofilament or fluorocarbon systems. S-Compact body geometry keeps the palming side as small as practical for each reel size, and Shimano increases handle length from 80 mm on the 12/16 to 85 mm on the 20/25 and 90 mm on the 40/50 as the reels move into heavier line classes. For Northeast offshore anglers, Talica A is the reel for customers who are not simply looking for enough reel to land a tuna—they want a lighter, smoother, more efficient fighting tool that remains composed when the drag is high and the fish is at its strongest.
